On your Pre-A or early A car the rear brake drums are probably the early versions and will require this oil slinger on the back side over the spline insert. The slinger is not only required to throw off any oil leakage but to give the drum proper thickness to the spline insert. Later A and B drums have the slinger function machined in place.
