The rubber gasket goes over the edge of the headlight glass, both US and Euro glasses. It is the proper thickness and durometer to be perfect fit. It is not cheap/thick VW part but an OE piece from Bosch Use this part and save yourself much grief assembling your headlights compared to cheaper alternatives.
